Aside from giving a heartfelt brava to Jennifer, whose Look Both Ways officially comes out tomorrow, reading and writing about woman-identified love has me thinking (predictably) about Valentine’s Day. And the retrograde IWF has got me thinking about what it means to “take back” a day.
Here’s my official call for a radical revamp of what it means to love.
1. Flowers, chocolate, hallmark, and general consumerism is not love.
2. Heterosexuality does not have an exclusive copyright on love or loving.
3. Rape and other violence against women is not an acceptable part of our romantic lives.
Go forth single and partnered: love honestly, love truly, love respectfully, and love yourself.
